EYELID AESTHETIC
IN TURKEY
Eyelid aesthetics, whose medical name is blepharoplasty, is the treatment of lower or upper eyelids, usually due to aging (it can occur at an early age due to genetics, trauma and infection), such as sagging, bagging, increased wrinkles, drooping of the upper lids and eyebrows, bags and lines on the lower lids. It is the name of the surgical correction process.
WHAT IS EYELID AESTHETIC ?
With the advancement of age and the effect of gravity, skin loosening, excess and sagging occur in the eyebrows, upper and lower eyelids, and there may be bagging, especially in the lower eyelids, with the forward herniation of the fat tissues. In addition to causing an aesthetic appearance disorder, this situation can prevent the person from seeing by closing the front of the eye with the drooping upper eyelids. With aesthetic eyelid surgery, excess skin is removed and the membrane in front of the herniated adipose tissue is strengthened and-or the excess fat mass is removed. In this way, both a beautiful appearance is obtained and the person can see comfortably. A scar is left on the upper eyelid along the lid. However, since this trace will be adapted to the fold of the lid, it is only visible when viewed very closely. On the lower lid, a trace remains just under the eyelashes, the rest of the trace looks like a normal skin line on the side. Eyelids are the least scarring part of the human body.
The skin is normally elastic. But as you age, its elasticity gradually decreases. As a result of the loss of elasticity in the facial skin, the excess skin is first collected on the eyelids. Therefore, the first signs of aging appear on the eyelids. Changes due to aging in the eyelids cause a tired, dull and old appearance in the person. Some of the signs of aging seen on the lower and upper eyelids;
-
Bagging and discoloration under the eyes
-
drooping upper eyelid
-
Wrinkles and sagging of the eyelid skin
-
Crow's feet lines around the eyes
-
It can be listed as a tired facial expression.
The excess skin on the eyelids causes drooping of the upper eyelid. This lowness can sometimes be so much that it prevents vision. In this case, it is necessary to treat this condition functionally. Sometimes drooping eyebrows and forehead are accompanied by droopy eyelids. In this case, there is an aesthetically worse appearance.
TYPES OF EYELID AESTHETIC
We can divide the eye and eye area aesthetic procedures into two as surgical or non-surgical. In surgical procedures, local anesthesia can be applied, as well as sedation (the patient is half asleep) or general anesthesia.
In non-surgical procedures, a superficial local anesthesia will be sufficient. Surgical incisions can be made with a scalpel or a radiofrequency device with less risk of bleeding, in natural folds or areas that do not appear hidden, in order to avoid scarring later.
Eyelid aesthetic surgery does not stop the aging of the eyelids. But it reduces the effects of aging. In addition, the results of eyelid aesthetic surgery continue to be effective for up to 8 years. After the operation, the person gains a lively, vigorous and youthful appearance instead of the tired expression.
HOW IS LOWER EYELID AESTHETICS PERFORMED?
At a young age, the fat in the cheekbones begins to shift downwards with the aging process and gravity, and this leads to collapse in the lower eyelid. At the same time, deepening of the laugh lines around the mouth occurs. These are the most important signs of aging. These symptoms show the person rather tired, exhausted and pale. Therefore, it is necessary to perform an aesthetic procedure for the fat pad. This method is done endoscopically and the process of hanging the fat pads is applied. This application is realized without any operation on the lower eyelid. In other words, after the suspending of the fat pads, no application can be made to the lower eyelid. After this method, the lower eyelid is reevaluated and examined. If the findings have not completely disappeared, then eyelid aesthetic surgery should be performed. The surgical incision is made under the eyelashes. The fat found here spreads towards the detention pit they conquered, and the excess muscle tissue and top is removed by removing it. If the dimple under the eyes still persists after the surgery, under-eye fat injection may be required. In this case, oil injection is done.
HOW IS UPPER EYELID AESTHETICS PERFORMED?
Lower eyelid aesthetics is among the most frequently used and experienced operations in oculoplastic surgery. The lower eyelid is a complex structure that integrates with the cheek, and our eye organ can experience a very troublesome process in faulty operations. For this reason, patients who want to have this surgery should definitely seek a doctor who has a very serious experience in this field.
Upper eyelid aesthetics or droopy eyelid surgery, in short, is the process of removing excess skin and muscle tissue in the area. An incision is made from the fold line of the eyelid so that the surgical scar is not visible. It gives better cosmetic results when applied together with forehead lift and eyebrow lift operations. In addition, patients who have eyelid aesthetics may also prefer operations such as almond eye aesthetics.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is eyelid aesthetics (blepharoplasty) permanent?
With eyelid aesthetics, the excess on the lids, especially the skin, sometimes muscle and fat tissues are also removed. This is a permanent operation and its effect lasts for 10-15 years. However, over time, there may be patients who need surgery again due to the decrease in skin elasticity, the effect of age, facial expressions and gravity.
Is eyelid aesthetics (blepharoplasty) risky?
Eyelid aesthetics is an operation with very low risks in experienced hands who are interested in this surgery. The most common effects; swelling (edema), rarely bruising and bleeding in the form of leakage, are mostly temporary conditions. However, infection, severe bleeding, or eye or vision-threatening problems have also been reported in the literature. However, there are very rare side effects, and the possibility of encountering such situations is almost non-existent with careful and meticulous surgery performed by competent people and taking necessary precautions.
What is the Ideal Treatment in Eye Aesthetic Surgery?
First of all, it is important to reach an ideal eyelid. In the treatment method, if there is a deep pit under the eye, this pit should be filled. In order to fill the pit, the process of spreading the oils formed in the detention bags downwards is done. At the same time, the cheeks are lifted up. Thus, a flat surface is created from the cheekbones to the lower eyelids. This look will be an important change for a fresh and youthful appearance.
If there is sagging on the cheeks, this situation must be corrected. For this, endoscopic techniques are used. It is possible to lift the cheeks or to lift the middle face with eyelid surgery. Forehead and eyebrows can also be evaluated together with eyelid surgery. In other words, if the eyebrows and forehead are stacked on the eyes and are drooping, this situation must be corrected with eyelid surgery.
How to Hide Scars in Eyelid Aesthetic Surgery?
For the natural appearance of the scars in eyelid aesthetic surgery, the scars are hidden invisibly. There is a natural fold in the upper lid section. Corrections are made by making an incision in this natural fold. The incision here provides tightening of the muscles. At the same time, excess skin is removed here.
Problems in the lower eyelid are corrected with an incision made adjacent to the lower lash line. With this incision, the excess skin on the lower eyelid is removed. Apart from these, there is an incision made on the inner side of the lower eyelid. This process is used as an alternative technique. In this method, the skin is removed.
At what age is blepharoplasty performed ?
Although there is no special age limit for blepharoplasty, that is, eyelid aesthetics, it is not suitable to be performed before the age of 18-20, when facial development and mental maturation are yet to be completed.
Since surgery is usually performed due to genetic problems, the lids of some people can be operated even in their twenties, especially if they cause problems in terms of vision or eye health. The ideal age for surgery in eyelid aesthetics is the age at which the person finds the problem disturbing.
Is non-surgical eyelid aesthetics possible?
There are some non-surgical eyelid procedures that we prefer in milder eyelid aesthetic problems that do not require surgery, in patients who do not want to have surgery yet, or in cases where more surgery is not appropriate due to their age and anatomy. After evaluating the patient's condition and deciding what type of treatment would be appropriate, botulinum toxin, filling, mesotherapy and device-based procedures are among the possible treatments.
With a meticulous application of botulinum toxin, it is possible to shape the eyebrows and raise the eyelid a little, as well as to open the lines. It is also a useful application for faster healing of surgical incisions and to support eyebrow lift surgeries.
Filler applications around the eyes offer many alternative possibilities in eyelid aesthetics. Raising the eyebrow, filling the collapsed areas in the upper eyelid, filling the pits in the lower eyelid are the main ones. In cases where there is not enough bagging on the lower lids to require surgery, fillings made with the appropriate technique and using the right material are very effective in removing dark circles and tired eye appearance.
Filler applications around the eyes also provide effective solutions for collapses caused by unnecessarily removed adipose tissues during surgery on the upper lids, or for the upper lids that appear deep after trauma or hereditary.
Mesotherapy applications for dark color changes, stains and lines around the eyes are effective in correctly selected patients and can provide non-surgical application in eye contour aesthetics. Most of the time, these applications can be preferred in combination with surgery.
Recovery After Blepharoplasty
After eyelid surgery, antibiotic ointment and ice are applied to the operation area and the patient is observed in the room for 2-3 hours. There is no need to cover or tape the eyes. If no problems are observed, the patient is discharged on the same day and ice is applied intermittently for 48-72 hours.
It is recommended to apply an antibiotic eye ointment to the wound site in the morning and evening for about 1 week. Swelling and bruising are normal and may last from 1-2 days to 1-2 weeks, depending on the patient's structure and the type of surgery. It is not recommended to lean forward, lift weights, and take long walks in the first days, since the recovery will be fast and smooth, depending on the rest and restriction of activity for the first 2-3 days.
For the first 4-5 days, it would be appropriate not to touch the wounds with water. Stitches 6-7. It is taken on days, after which no special treatment is needed. After 4-6 weeks in any incision, a rapid remodeling phase begins after the wound becomes redder and tighter, and the already obscure scars become invisible within weeks.
It is recommended to stay away from the sea, pool and heavy sports for the first 2 weeks, and if heavy activities are gradually increased starting from the 10th day, the recovery will be better. Under normal conditions, patients can easily return to their desk jobs after the 3rd day, and to their work that requires activity after the 1st week.
